Would you Walk 400 Kilometres for a cause close to your heart?
A nine week journey to walk 400km to support a cause dear to someone's heart is about to begin. "It's the walk of my life", says volunteer and Ambassador Arnold Clarke, who was diagnosed with epilepsy as a child. "50 years later and we still need to raise awareness for this catastrophic disease. It's something I believe in and I want to give back." Clarke will embark on a nine week quest completing a total distance of 400 kilometers throughout Durham Region leading up to the organization's annual Walk for Epilepsy on Sunday, June 12th, 2016.
Arnold was born with Epilepsy, having his first seizure when he was only 4-months old. However, that has not done anything to slow him down. Arnold has been a dedicated volunteer to EDR for the past 13 years, receiving the prestigious Queen's Jubilee award in 2013. Along with raising funds and awareness through his 'Walk of Courage', Arnold also steps up with many other volunteering initiatives, including making monthly trips to businesses all over Durham Region collecting donations from coin boxes, and lending his time to local churches and Sunday schools. "I feel it is the right thing to do to help many understand what Epilepsy is, I just like to help people", says Clarke.
300, 000 Canadians and more than 50 million people worldwide are diagnosed with Epilepsy. "Our goal is to help improve quality of life for those living with or caring for those touched by Epilepsy", says Dianne McKenzie, Executive Director of Epilepsy Durham. Participation and donations for the Walk of Courage will help this organization ensure that local support is available. All funds raised remains in Durham Region to support local families.
Arnold invites everyone to walk with him – "It can get lonely walking by yourself." If you are interested in making a donation to support Arnold's Walk of Courage you can do so here and selecting 'Arnold's Walk', or by contacting the office. Pledge forms and registration information for the walk are also available.
