At 18 years old, Aydin has already faced more challenges than most people encounter in a lifetime, and he has met every one of them with extraordinary determination.
Diagnosed with Lennox-Gastaut syndrome, a rare and severe form of genetic epilepsy, Aydin’s journey to answers was not straightforward. For years, his family navigated a maze of physicians, countless medication trials, and complex testing. It was not until he underwent invasive deep brain imaging that they finally received a diagnosis, one that helped explain the daily seizures he had been living with since early childhood.
But Aydin’s story is not defined by his diagnosis. Growing up, he faced not only the physical toll of frequent seizures, but also the emotional weight of bullying and the struggle to find a school environment where he could truly thrive. Each obstacle could have limited his path, but instead, Aydin and his family became unwavering advocates. Together, they pushed forward, determined to build a life shaped not by limitations, but by possibility.
Throughout this journey, Epilepsy Durham Region has been proud to stand alongside Aydin and his family. Since the age of six, Aydin has been part of a community that offered more than support. It offered understanding. From helping navigate complex healthcare systems and advocating within schools, to creating a safe space where Aydin could be heard, empowered, and feel a true sense of belonging, the organization has been a constant presence in his life.
Most exciting of all, Aydin is now celebrating a milestone that once felt out of reach. This year, he received early acceptance into college, an achievement some once told him might not be possible. Aydin has been awarded a scholarship in recognition of his perseverance, resilience, and accomplishments, helping to support him as he begins this exciting new chapter. Even more inspiring, Aydin has been invited to speak at an international IT conference about how AI has supported his learning journey while living with a disability.
Aydin’s story is a powerful reminder that with the right support, advocacy, and determination, barriers can be transformed into stepping stones. His journey reflects not only his own strength, but also the impact of a community that believes in lifting one another up.
