First Aid For Seizures

Home » First Aid For Seizures

First Response Protocol

1. Stay calm

Never attempt to restrain someone having a seizure. Simply let the seizure take its course. Remember a person having a seizure is not always aware of their actions and may not be able to hear you.

2. Time the seizure.

If it repeats or lasts longer than 5 minutes, call for medical attention.

3. Consider safety hazards.

Move any sharp objects or obstacles out of the way. If the person is wandering about, stay by their side and gently steer them away from danger. If you perceive the person to be unconscious loosen tight clothing such as a necktie or scarf.

4. If the person has fallen

Roll them on to their left side and place something soft under their head.

5. Never Insert Anything Into Their Mouth.

The individual experiencing the seizure might bite their tongue. However, you should not attempt to open their mouth or place anything between their teeth during the seizure. After the seizure, it’s crucial to ensure that their airways are clear.

6. After the seizure

Speak to the person in a gentle, quiet and friendly manner. Be comforting and reassuring as they may be confused and disoriented. Stay with them until full consciousness returns, and offer assistance.
